Recreation facilities in and
near Sechelt include an ice arena for public skating, hockey and figure skating, an
18-hole golf course in Sechelt, an 18-hole golf course in Roberts Creek and a 9-hole golf
course in Pender Harbour, provincial parks and campgrounds at Roberts Creek and Porpoise
Bay in Sechelt, and public swimming pools in Gibsons and Pender Harbour. Boating, sport
fishing, swimming, water skiing, scuba diving, wind surfing, canoeing, kayaking,
bicycling, golf and cross-country skiing are enjoyed mostly all year round. Hiking trails
include Smuggler's Cove (20 minutes), Skookumchuk Rapids (50 minutes), Chapman Falls (60
minutes), Cliff Gilker Park (10 minutes to 2 hours), Sechelt Marsh (15 minutes),
Kinnikinnick Nature Walk (30 minutes). In addition, the more adventurous can hike the
Caren Range and Tetrahedron Plateau.
There is a private club for indoor tennis and the Gibsons Yacht Club provides the
opportunity for boaters to meet together. The Rotary Club and the Lions Club are the main
public service organizations in Sechelt; there are many more associations and volunteer
groups.
There are daily bus services to Vancouver and there is also an expanding bus
transportation system servicing the Coast.
Sechelt's St. Mary's Hospital has 33 acute beds and 50 extended care beds and provides
medical, surgical, obstetrical, pediatric, extended care and emergency care services. Two
medical clinics, two dental clinics, chiropractic and optometrist offices' are available
in Sechelt, as well as an intermediate care facility. More medical services are available
in areas outside Sechelt proper.
Sechelt enjoys the benefits of a complete school system. Sechelt Elementary services from
kindergarten to grade 7 and Chatalech Senior secondary has a speech and learning
pathologist on staff. Davis Bay, West Sechelt and West Porpoise Bay provide elementary schools. Post secondary
students can use the satellite centre of Capilano College.
